Diesel pickups in Thailand work harder than most cars — loads, towing, traffic jams and heat. Picking the right oil grade helps the engine and turbo last longer. Here is what to check, in order.
1. Start with the owner’s manual
The manual lists two values — viscosity (e.g. 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-40) and a minimum grade (e.g. API CI-4, CJ-4 or ACEA C2/C3). Always start there; requirements differ by make and engine.
2. Does the vehicle have a DPF?
Newer pickups built to Euro 5 emissions (mandatory for new vehicles in Thailand from 2024) usually have a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which can clog if the oil’s ash content is too high.
- With a DPF → use an oil designed for it, e.g. API CK-4 / CJ-4 or ACEA C2/C3/E6, as the manual specifies.
- Without a DPF (pre-Euro 5 vehicles) → API CI-4 or newer is fine; CK-4 also works because it is backward compatible.
If unsure, check the manual or ask a service centre whether your vehicle has a DPF.
3. Choose viscosity for real-world use

Don’t stray far from the manual’s viscosity, especially on newer engines designed for thinner oils.
4. Fully synthetic or semi-synthetic?
- Semi-synthetic is enough for everyday driving and loads if changed at the manual’s interval.
- Fully synthetic handles heat better and lasts longer — good for turbo engines driven fast or far, or vehicles running LPG/NGV.
5. Are additives necessary?
A properly graded oil already contains a full additive package. An additive is a supplement, not a substitute for changing oil on time. If you use one, pick a product labelled for diesel engines and follow the ratio on the label. See Additives & boosters.
